McSorley's Old Ale House
The 152-year-old establishment known as McSorley’s is clearly one of Manhattan’s happy hour havens. A barrage of loyal regulars and first-timers, curious to see the oldest bar in New York, spend hours at the tables every night. Not only is McSorley’s old school, but it also houses one of the city’s largest sausage-fests. Women were allowed in the bar in the ’70s, but to this day, only a handful of sisters dare show their faces. Maybe it’s because you can’t order a martini here. The uncomplicated drink menu consists of light and dark beer, both brewed in-house, and a steal at $4 for the pair. Sans jukebox, barstools, or big-screen TVs, McSorley’s is a no-frills bar, but it does provide wooden floors with inches of sawdust and bartenders famously annoyed by you.

Beer at McSorleys

Is it just me or has the beer at McSorleys started to taste bad? I love the place, it is an icon and I have been going there for 25 years but the other night the beer tasted terrible. I asked the bartender whats up and he said that the formula has been changed. I said it was terrible and he sorta nodded in agreement. Anyone else?

Great personality.....

Two beers for the price of one is a Two beers for the price of one is a great deal, especially when the price is $4. This place have been in the neighborhood since forever and it doesn't look like much have changed since they opened, the place is filled with personality. Big tables that strangers or no strangers are sharing over home brewed beer. I was here with my boyfriend some years ago and I haven’t been back, but every time I pass this bar I wanna go inside. It’s a great place to hang out, talk nonsense and enjoy.

yes please

I am in agreeance. The bar is an original and not some chain diet of sandwich.

AWESOME

This is one of the best bars I have ever been to. All they serve is 2 kinds of beer (McSorleys light and dark). There is no music so you can actually talk to the people around you. It is a bar experience unlike any other. The bartenders are a$$holes, it's hilarious. I love this place for all of the same reasons some uptight people hate it.

Save your time, money, and embarassment

This bar is just strait up awful. I'd like to consider myself a seasoned bar guy, and let me give it to you strait. You're gonna sit down with your friends (do NOT wear nice clothes there). Guys, NOT a girlfriend place either. Then, some old Irish *&$# (no I'm NOT racist) will come over, slam down about 20 beers (light and dark, 10 oz mugs), you pay him, and he'll come back with whatever change he decides to give you. So, he'll take his tip. And then, you might give him another tip. Then you'll realize he stole from you, get pissed and leave. Or, he'll kick you out. Oh yeah, there's no music there, no yelling or singing.
You're welcome...

historical

The simplicity of McSorley's is what makes it so much fun. Tourists love it as much as real New Yorker's.

Getting old, fast

When a bar is famous for its dust and ornery waiters, something's wrong. The bar reeks of god knows what, the crowd resembles a frat house, and the waiters rude (whether it's your "generous" tipping or your slow drinking). Worst of all, you'll probably have to wait in line to experience all this joy. There are far too many great old bars in this city (Old Town Tavern) to warrant a trip to this novelty act.
