Marion's Continental: CLOSED.
After World War II, Marion Nagy escaped Stalinist Hungary for France. When she made her way to America in 1950, she did what any refugee-cum-couture-model would—she opened her own restaurant/lounge. For 23 years, Nagy entertained the literati and glitterati at her Bowery saloon. In 1990, her son reopened the space in all its retro-glam glory. The décor tells the place’s history: wavy black banquettes against ’70s orange walls; a disco ball spinning to lounge music; JFK and Jackie O. next to an autographed head shot of Burt Reynolds. Like the surroundings, the scene is older and a little more sophisticated than at most other bars that flank the Bowery, although the area is gentrifying. Times, they are a changin’, even if Marion’s never will. |
