Maremma: CLOSED.
Smack in the middle of the Marc-Jacobs-re-gentrified West Village, Maremma serves traditional Tuscan fare in a rustic Italian cowboy-themed atmosphere—sounds odd, but it works. This high-profile eatery doesn’t suffer from the hipper-than-thou syndrome like so many of its neighbors. Instead, it concentrates on great food, affordable prices, and unpretentious service. Creative Tuscan-inspired favorites include the "Sloppy Giuseppe," a take on a traditional Sloppy Joe with braised oxtail over fettunta and the “Moonshine,” fusilli with tomato, bourbon, and Grana Padano. While the food may be affordable, drinks will run up your tab with wines by the glass ranging from $14 to $17. Prices like these prevent the bar from becoming a scene—which is a good thing when you want to enjoy a meal without feeling like you stepped into Vice magazine.
