Macondo: Between the Caribbean music and fruit hanging from above the wooden bar, Macondo feels a little bit like a Corona commercial, sans beach. But this East Village Latin eatery from the people of Rayuela is anything but a commercialized, phony to-do. In fact, they don’t even serve Corona. Why would you when you have original cocktails like the Zanhoria, made with G’Vine Gin, carrot juice, lime juice, pineapple juice, agave nectar, and Cointreau? After a few drinks at the bar, head to the back and sit in a Pepto-Bismol-pink banquette and dabble in small plates, like the Buenos Aires, a Latin take on pizza made with grilled steak, cheese, and jalapenos on flat bread, or the Willianco (oven-roasted quail and figs). Just remember to chalk a few words of thanks on the graffitied bathroom wall. It’s their take on the postcard.
