Macelleria:
How does a quality restaurant like Macelleria survive in a neighborhood where diners deliberate over which sauces will match their shoes? In a perfect world, Macelleria—Italian for “butcher’s shop”—would set the tone for Meatpacking District eateries. Pastas and seafood at this rustic mid-to-high-end restaurant are fantastic, and obviously, steaks are a specialty. The charmingly countrified upstairs room opens onto a cobblestone road and there are additional tables out there. In back is an operating butcher’s shop, complete with old-school accoutrements and even hanging sausages. The subterranean wine cellar doubles as a private dining room and its brick walls are covered with family crests and the like, giving the impression of an Italian baron’s den. This is a great date spot.
