Macao Trading Co.: In this seemingly deserted area just south of Canal street, muffled music trembles from behind dozens of unmarked doors—and Macao Trading Co. is no exception. If you can find it, you’ll see that the front bar area of this funky warehouse-esque space starts crawling with the trendiest Tribecans as soon as the whistle blows five. The restaurant itself is intended to mimic Macao’s red lantern district circa 1940, and the intimate basement-level lounge adds a little opium-den-like flavor. Come here to sample the Portugese, Chinese, and African cuisine of Macao’s mixed ancestry, prepared by Chef David Waltuck of Chanterelle. Or maybe you'll just want to go home with said stylish Tribecan after polishing off a Dr. Funk cocktail made with absinthe, or a Lovee Long Time with gin and elderflower liqueur. It’s anybody’s call. Open daily 5pm-4am and Sat.-Sun. 11:30am-3pm.
