Lugo Caffé: Newcomer Lugo Caffé, near glamorous Penn Station and MSG, takes you far from the Popeye's down the street to Fellini’s Rome. Owners of Nolita-based men’s clothier Lugo Tailored Menswear have perfected their second culinary foray. Lugo Caffé (formerly Tupelo Grill) is as well-constructed as the $200 Lugo dress shirts worn by their waiters. Classically cool and remarkably unimposing, the 150-seat interior by Jun Aziki (Rayuela) has soaring bronze ceilings, blonde wood floors, floating wine racks, and panoramic photomurals of Italians enjoying the sweet life. Chef Greg Lombardi (of Tupelo Grill) offers gorgeously-plated antipasti and Florentine steak ($72 for two). And though there’s plentiful seating at the spacious bar, commuters here prefer to stand and sip Prosecco ($9) before shuttling back to the ‘burbs. Though expensive, Lugo offers exceptional food and relaxing atmosphere in an area that's anything but. |
