Life Café
It’s impossible to mention Life Café without referencing Jonathan Larson in the same breath, as he was a regular, and the last scene of Act I in his “Rent” takes place here. Life has always catered to East Village artists, but there is nothing remarkable on the menu. The staff is well aware of the establishment’s underground fame, and uses this status as a license to do, well, not much of anything. Dining and drinking outdoors is appealing, but to be a regular you’d have to be enamored with the historical value of the place, because these days, it’s not impressing anyone.

Coxy and laid back

I have to agree, the brunch here is nice and the staff is friendly and laid back. A nice and cozy place to visit in the winter, try the hot chocolate or in the summer, sit outside.

Man... there's no pleasing some people!

Geeez... whoever wrote that little bit about the Life Cafe from Shecky's is a real hard-on. I go to Life Cafe almost every day, maybe for the last 2 years. Yea, they have a connection with RENT, but Life Cafe was here first, so they don't have to do diddly-squat to imitate or connect themselves with the story. (And honestly, I think I'd barf if they did.) If you like a feel-good kind of atmosphere with groovy music, a laid-back and friendly staff, a meal that'll not only leave you satisfied, but happy, and the desire to return for "that special dish", well, you'd be fortunate if you live close-by. For breakfast, check out Huevos Rancheros, and definitely get a Blueberry Frozen Margarita, no beating that one, anywhere.
