Last Exit: On a stretch of Atlantic Avenue quickly filling with bars and lounges, Last Exit successfully walks the line between dark underworld bar and cool dormitory hangout. Exposed brick walls, bold paintings, deep red ceilings, and velvet curtains create a warm, sexy, shadowy atmosphere—one in which you never know who you might meet. The unobtrusive track lighting and well-placed candles do little to penetrate the darkness. Come weekends, the hodgepodge of low couches and coffee tables fills up with youngish locals, and looks less red-light lovers’ den and more stylish rec room, complete with overhead disco ball. The transition is smoothed, fortunately, by eclectic music (from either a DJ or a bartender’s iPod), great house cocktails, popular bimonthly quiz, karaoke nights, and a spacious backyard garden. Scoring six cans of PBR for $10 ain’t bad either. |
