La Lanterna di Vittorio: It’s the little coffee-shop that could. Emerging from humble espresso-slinging beginnings, La Lanterna now shines as a romantic Italian cuisine destination. Of course, this being Greenwich Village, getting a table can be a tall order—but you'll be glowing (literally) when you finally do snag a seat in the back patio, which is illuminated by four 10-foot tall, lamp-shaped lighting towers. With retractable glass ceilings high above, this space is almost more greenhouse than garden. Not that we're complaining, 'cause this means seating year-round (we can't wait to take a date here when it's snowing). When you're ready to dine, slurp from a comprehensive wine list that ranges from affordable to three-figures, and try out the Pizza Alla Napoletana (anchovy and capers, $12.50), which makes the whole evening worth the wait. There’s even a jazz club conveniently located in the basement—a move straight out of the Greenwich Village restaurant handbook—so you can make a complete night of it. Just be prepared to deal with people eyeing your table while you eye your date (or your pizza).
