L’Artusi
There’s no jinxing L’Artusi, the sophomore effort from restauranteuring duo Gabe Thompson and Joe Campanale, owners of the successful dell’anima restaurant (also in the West Village). A sensational wine list featuring superbly selected vinos from New York and Italy perfectly compliments a seasonal Italian menu that offers everything from the newly trendy (braised beef cheeks) to classic dishes like chicken cacciatore and spaghetti and meatballs. The best part is that everything is completely affordable and won’t leave you starving for cash. The space itself is huge, with over 100 seats and an open kitchen for added visual enjoyment. To say L’Artusi has potential is an understatement, so make sure to get here and enjoy its casual ambience before it gains the same popularity of its sister restaurant. Open daily 5:30pm-1am.

Better than average...

L'Artusi is off to an auspicious start. Reservations through the first week are impossible to come by, however the bar area is large and comfortable. The staff promptly greeted us as we walked in and our bartender/server was extremely attentive. The menu is market-fresh, non-traditional Italian and it is reasonably inexpensive; wine can not be purchased for less than forty dollars however. Great Frisee salad with poached egg, though it was a little heavy on the cured meat. Tajarin with ragu (veal, chicken liver, pancetta) was divine but could have come out hotter. Brisket was just ok -- polenta that it came with reminded of something that would be a staple during the Great Depression. Olive Oil cake tasted a little stale and should have been warm and moist. They claim to have a Cheese Plate and a raw bar, but the diversity of cheese available is disappointing (all sheeps milk last night I think). No raw bar to be seen. Also a cheese plate should come with fruit or bread...Overall, a solidly good place with potential. I wouldn't rush back there but might reconsider if the buzz continues to be positive.
