Kyo Ya: Feel like staying home rather than face the nightly bar-hopping chaos that is the East Village? Descend the foliage-laden steps to Kyo Ya and enter an oasis of Japanese tranquility. With its décor of pebbled floors, simple floral motifs, and dark natural woods, this tiny spot breathes authenticity. A mostly Asian crowd comes for the traditional kaiseki menu which, while not cheap (entrees are over $20), offers a fresh take on Japanese cuisine. If the six tables are occupied, head for one of two bars for some shrimp mousse balls or sweet potato tempura washed down with, of course, sake. Don’t know sake from hockey? A friendly sommelier is on hand to guide you through the 23 varieties. And how’s this for Japanese subtlety: Hidden in the gorgeous curved and wood-paneled walls behind you are the unmarked restroom doors—a secret, just like the restaurant itself.
Open Tues.-Sat. from 5:30pm-11:30pm and Sun. 5:30pm-10:30pm. |
