Knitting Factory: What started in 1987 in a run-down Avon cosmetics office on Houston and Bowery has in the years since migrated south and evolved into a supremely hip live music and performance venue. The multilevel complex hosts everything from literary readings and book parties to punk rock performances and emerging artists. Something eclectic is bound to be going on any given night in the Main Space, Tap Bar, and Old Office, as the floors are called. The vibe changes depending on who’s performing, but the space is always raw and gritty in the spirit of downtown hipster chic. The downstairs feels like your cool-friend-who’s-in-a-band’s basement, while the main level’s home to theater. Past performances have been the writers from “Sex and the City”’s Christmas stories, a party honoring Brooklyn author Ned Vizzini, and the Jersey-shows.com’s Battle of the Bands. |
