King Cole Bar @ the St. Regis Hotel: If Mr. Peanut were a real person, this is where he would get drunk, along with the guy from Monopoly and Scrooge McDuck. Monocles and tuxedos are more likely to be seen than jeans and Jeter t-shirts, but the Bloody Mary was allegedly invented here (to this day still known as the “Red Snapper”). A huge mural depicting the “Old King Cole” nursery rhyme faces patrons, and the bartenders can’t be beat. The room sets a mood that is hardly matched anywhere in Midtown, and—haughty crowd aside—if you dress nicely and use the word “charmed” a few times, you’ll enjoy yourself. Bring a date, a suitcase full of Franklins to pay for the drinks, and study “Old King Cole,” and there’s no way you won’t impress whomever you’re with. |
