Like the Emerald Isle itself, this Irish pub is caught in a tug-of-war between two different masters. Only in this case, theme trumps politics and J.D.’s finds itself at the mercy of both “quaint Irish tradition” and “modern Southern dive,” implying “J.D.” might stand for Jethro Donnelly. Because for each Irish ying (shepherd’s pie and the very tasty and quite affordable “famous wee burgers”), there’s a Southern yang (“peel-and-eat shrimp”) lurking somewhere in the background. But don’t fret, because just when it seems that the bar has exhausted all possible U2 and neo-So-rock standards, it surprises with its own unique, muddled charm. And anyone can see why, after more than three decades, customers keep coming back for a wee bit of this bar’s blarney brand of Southern comfort. |
