Jadis: If kissing and fries are all you know about France, then get yourself over to the east side for a lesson in “vin.” Jadis is the French version of all those Italian wine bars that have been popping up lately. Jadis, which means “formerly” in French, oozes of old world charm. Descend into a grotto-like space with wooden tables and stools. Long dark leather sofas and sultry lighting cozy up the back lounge, and walls are exposed brick, as is the curved ceiling reminiscent of the shape of a wine barrel. Shelves built into the walls display the countless bottles on offer; most are French and most go for $6 a glass. The staff is clued-in on every one, so don’t be shy about asking for a recommendation to go with the French country fare, including cheese, pate, and quiche, they serve up. |
