J.G. Melon: JG Melon has the same kind of well-worn charm as your grandparents’ house. Everything looks old and familiar, like the place hasn’t changed since it opened 32 years ago; dusty pictures of cantaloupes and watermelons adorn the walls, and at the cash-only bar, the bartender uses a relic of a cash register to ring up tabs. Longtime regulars and newbies alike come straight from work for the no-frills atmosphere, beer, and solid grub, but social drinkers, beware: There’s a limited beer and wine selection, and mingling is hard to do in the tiny bar room. Of course, for burger buffs, there’s reason to rejoice—JG Melon might just be the best place on the Upper East Side to get a cold Bud and a hearty hunk of cow. |
