Hell Gate Social: Eight long blocks from the nearest subway, in a still ungentrified section of Astoria, lies this proudly artsy cocktail lounge that takes its name from the rusty Amtrak bridge that soars above nearby Astoria Park. For three years, manager George Rallis has schemed up events that involve what their website calls “local artists of all disciplines, revolutionaries, and fallen angels.” They project short films from Astoria filmmakers onto a big screen on the patio in the summertime, Mondays feature $3-beer and $7-beer-and-food recession specials, every Wednesday there's a popular "Rock Band" contest, and the first Friday of every month is the burlesque Rockabilly Floorshow, featuring the band AM Preachers. Rotating DJs spin on other weekend nights. If all this fails to keep it social, check out the coed communal hand-washing station outside the downstairs bathrooms —a guaranteed conversation piece that's probably helped lubricate its share of late-night hookups.
