Hedeh: While the décor at this upscale Japanese restaurant (pronounced “hee-day”) is a little uninspired—its most remarkable feature being walls of neon- and back-lit bottles of booze—the cocktails are anything but. Perched on tiny, airplane-like seats around low tables, neighborhood regulars wash down pricey but delectable mouthfuls of sushi with fruity sake sangria or shochu, the latest Japanese alcohol to give rice wine a run for its money. With energetic sushi chefs releasing a volley of greetings as patrons enter the restaurant, it’s kind of like “Cheers”…in Japanese…with raw fish. It doesn’t matter that the place can’t make up its mind between swanky Asian lounge and neighborhood sushi joint because the drinks are good, and the food is even better. No sake bombs, but no diminutive starlets either. |
