Heartland Brewery & Chophouse: This is one of five Heartland brewpubs in the city, and they all follow the same formula that finds a way to successfully combine family dining with good beer. In addition to five permanent pours, seasonal house lagers and ales are the thing here—like the Mother’s Milk Maibock in May, Grateful Red Lager in the spring, Smiling Pumpkin Ale in the fall, and holiday-inspired Red Nose Ale that’s a favorite for Christmas Show attendees. Beers are classified by color, flavor, finish, and, of course, menu suggestions. And if you’re wondering if Farmer Jon’s Oatmeal Stout is more like Guinness or Heineken, they’ll tell you that too. The Chophouse has three mahogany-heavy dining rooms and a collection of pre-prohibition brewery paraphernalia. Steaks, chops, and pastas are what’s for dinner, and for the underage, homemade draft sodas. |
