Goodbye Blue Monday: Believe it or not, Brooklyn's skyrocketing popularity (and rents) haven't killed off the early 20s broke geek hangout completely. It's just that you have to go increasingly out of the way to find them, places like Broadway between Dodworth and Lawton. It is there, beneath the screeching tracks of the J train, that you will find Goodbye Blue Monday, a cafe-bar-junk shop-performance space packed to the ceilings with thousands of records and assorted kitsch, all for sale. The $2 cans of PBR taste just as good here as anywhere, and the wines (categorized by color and the time-honored "good/better" rating system) are also agreeably priced. On the downside, the crowd is a bit insular and are quick to sniff out the non-nerd interloper, probably (and rightly) because they probably don't want to face the prospect of eventually having to move even FURTHER east into some nameless section of Queens. Still, if your friend's band is playing their debut show at this spot, don't hesitate to go, especially if you also need to pick up a bowling ball. |
