Gilbey's: In an area packed with exotic Middle Eastern café bars, hookah joints and restaurants from around the globe, sometimes you just want a straightforward sports bar complete with a gruff old-school Irish barman. But make no mistake: This is no dive. It’s a handsome, fairly upscale bar with 12 beers on tap—including Guinness, of course—and a range of single malt scotches. It’s an unexpected treat to see how many attractive women swarm around here on a consistent basis, given the almost zero trend factor (or maybe because of it?). The prime location right off the Broadway stop in the buzzing center of Astoria can’t hurt, making this no-nonsense Irish pub a great meeting spot—or ending spot, after a night of bar-hopping.
