Gibraltar: Sometimes walking into a bar is like being smacked in the face with a trend. This one, beneath the new downtown Jacques brasserie, follows in the well-tread footsteps of such Moroccan-themed clubs as Sway and Le Souk. Think lots of red velvet, damask wallpaper, gauzy curtains, and key-hole doorframes. There’s a DJ playing house music and bottle service at low votive-lit tables. The female portion of the crowd is almost guaranteed to be showing lots of skin and the latest cute-or-not trends, while the male contingent is attractive but, we hate to say it, just kinda dorky. (NB: We don’t recommend telling them this unless you want to be buying your own drinks all night.) If there’s one thing we learned in high school, it’s that trying too hard is never cool. |
