Freddy's Bar & Backroom
Going by the decrepit blue shade hanging outside Freddy’s, you might mistake this worn-in Brooklyn classic for an underachieving dump. Not that Freddy’s isn’t a delectable dive—the cheap beers, a “whatever” ’tude, and scruffy gaggle of all-hours regulars attest to that. A former speakeasy, bowling alley, and cop bar, Freddy’s is best-known as a fringe art space. Its large backroom doubles as a gallery for local artists and the Rev 99 (a TV airing improv television), while the stage sports unknown bands belting out everything from bluegrass and folk to “Minimalist Brooklyn Chick Jazz”…woo-hoo! All the fun is cover-free, as is the clientele-published literary zine, “Lurch.” Freddy’s also has foosball, board games, random books, and monthly meetings with the Brooklyn Libertarian Party. How’s that for an underachiever?
