Fraunces Tavern Restaurant
This pre-war (the war in this case being the Revolutionary one) watering hole was once the New York hangout of choice for George Washington and Benjamin Franklin and other rebels who, according to historians, drank many an ale while discussing the urgent matters of the time—freedom and babes. Today the platoons of Wall Street dudes who pack the Tavern don’t seem too interested in rebellion, but they still do like the beer (of which there are 12 on tap, each costing $3 during happy hour) and the babes (who are usually outnumbered 25 to one). Maybe the founding fathers would disapprove of what’s become of their beloved tavern. Then again, they didn’t have plasma TVs in the 1700s.
