Forbidden City: Funny how you always seem to find yourself wandering the East Village at 2am, searching in vain for something—anything—to quell your hunger pains. Cranking out a full pan-Asian menu from 5pm until 4am Tuesday through Sunday, this bar is a hungry nightcrawler’s dream. Forbidden City also commands an attractive mixed crowd who pack around the oblong bar for wine, beer, cocktails, sake, and Shochu. Rich with atmosphere, the gentleness of low lighting, antique Asian artifacts, and a paneled dragon mural along one wall are pleasantly offset by DJs spinning hip-hop Thursday through Saturday. And on Sunday nights an Afro-Cuban band rocks out at 9pm. The small dining area in back is great for private parties while two cozy booths flanking the front door can also be reserved for private groups. Just remember, the kitchen is closed on Mondays, so try to grab a sandwich pre-bar crawl. |
