Five Points: Not at all related to the neighborhood overtaken by the rowdy Irish hooligans of 19th-century New York, the patrons at this NoHo restaurant and bar have probably never seen a gang member in their life, save for on CNN. An aging downtown yuppie crowd convenes here seven nights a week for Mediterranean-American comfort food, a stellar wine list, and unexpected, herb-infused cocktails. From the 25-seat bar area, happy hour patrons enjoying dollar oysters on the half shell and $5 martinis can see into the vaguely Swiss, partly Zen dining room, where a stream burbles quietly through a split log running through the center of the room. The feeling is cozy and low-key but classy; you get the feeling the couple enjoying their after-dinner port might be discussing Chekhov. |
