Film Center Café: Stop by the Film Center Café after curtain call and you could run into the cast of the show you just saw…but you might not recognize them in the shadowy back room. The space—which originally housed a bar and cafeteria for film workers—is dimly lit like a movie set sound stage and feels like it should be filled with trench-coat-and-fedora-wearing chain smokers. The décor pays homage to film icons past with movie posters on menu covers, headshots adorning the walls, and TVs always tuned in to the classics. More vintage diner than café, no one and nothing tries too hard here, especially the American food-focused menu full of overstuffed sandwiches, burgers, and the continuous breakfast offering; a modest selection of “the hard stuff” is also served. Booths are comfy and worn in, the two-person variety usually occupied by the lone diner reading this week’s edition of “Backstage.” |
