Ella
With a stunning Art Deco interior by Carleton Varney (decorator of the Hotel Carlyle), waitresses in flapper garb, and a glam, Gatsby-esque crowd, bi-level piano bar Ella (formerly Julep) is more reminiscent of F. Scott than Ella Fitzgerald. Darin Rubell, Josh Boyd, and Jordan Boyd (Plan B and Gallery Bar) pay homage to the deliciously decadent Jazz Age, while luring plenty of roaring twenty-somethings. If you make it through the ultra-selective door, savor a Plum Gin Fizz ($12) at the ground floor's expansive glass bar. Vintage Chanel posters and large mirrors will catch your eye, while semicircular red banquettes from the Oscars offer relief from your stilettos. The lower level, a live music venue seating 40, showcases everyone from jazz pianists to DJs to small bands. So save the dingy speakeasies for another night, 'cause Ella is a far fresher trip back in time. Open daily 6pm-4am.

HORRIBLE

I was in there the other night and I seriously felt like I was at some sort of high school gathering. My friends and I were probably some of the oldest in the room by at least 10 years (mind you that I'm only 28). For having such a strict door policy and only let in the "who's who" of NYC, maybe this spot should try to only let in people that are actually of age to drink and don't have to worry about rushing home for their curfews. It was rather annoying to tell the truth that every time I turned around there was another kid here or there that clearly should have not been inside. Besides that the place seemed to be pretty nice and the music wasn't too bad. I would not suggest this spot if you're looking to grab a quick drink or anything of the sort.

TWO THUMBS DOWN

I can not say enough bad things about this bar. I did venture there in the days immediately following the opening... and got there with a few friends prior to the bouncer arriving at his post. This is a good thing and if you ever have to go... get there at 10. If you don't your friends will be hasseled (especially if they are dudes) they'll have to wait in the freezing cold...and if you do dare to go outside to use your cell phone the bouncer will tell you to GET BACK IN LINE. This bar is insane. Sure, there might be an East Village pretty people dance party happening downstairs (where there is a serious amount of weed being smoked) but it just isn't worth it. Drinks are 12 bones and for the AWFUL door service they have - you'll want to kick someone in the shin and demand your cash back.

My other experience there was on New Year's Eve... where they said they had a private party and while they let in two friends of mine a few minutes before I got there.. I stood outside in seriously freezing temps (I was the only one in line) for a good ten minutes before we began asking questions. When my friends came outside to see what was taking so long and said that the bar WAS NOT full the bouncer threw them out into the cold. The evening ended with a PHYSICAL ALTERCATION between the bouncer and my friends. He actually pushed us and was all up in our business. I will NEVER NEVER go back to this bar. Seriously, this bouncer needs to go.

AND for everyone out there who chooses to go to Ella - know that now in New York City bouncers must have a security license of sorts. This gangster bouncer sure doesn't have it... so when he hassels you, please call the cops so he gets the fine that he seriously deserves.

Ella, you should be ashamed for hiring AWFUL staff who are physical with customers. This is the East Village not the Meatpacking District so I am not entirely sure why you have created the most insane door policy to be found in what most people consider to be a hipster haven of sorts. who do you think you are?

TERRIBLE

First off..i live in the neighborhood, and figured it would be a nice down to earth and classy spot for my 27th birthday. I called in advance and spoke with the owner to make a reservation. he specifically said that a reservation is NOT necessary, and to drop in and everything should be fine. sure enough, all my friends show up at 10pm (about 10 people) The doorman, was the tackiest, rudest and unwelcoming doorman I have ever encountered in my life. Said there was a private party and a performer that night...but could MAYBE accomodate us with a 3 bottle minumum. Since everyone was already there, we did the bottle service..we walked in, and the place was EMPTY. no tables being used, no one was even there..and they still would not let the rest of my party in. It was the worst birthday ever because they ruined it. and to top it all off...my boyfriend paid for the bottle service with his credit card, and i just held the table with my card..they charged us BOTH..its been days and i still have not seen the credit..DONT GO TO ELLA!!!!!!!!!
