Elaine’s
What is it about this by-the-numbers pub that serves mediocre food in a boring neighborhood that draws in the New York celebrity elite? Some credit the eponymous owner, but frankly, there’s plenty of other interesting old broads running gin joints in this town, and you don’t see Barbra Streisand hanging out in those other places. That said, Elaine’s must have something going for it, and even if it is just surviving off the fumes of its own fame, it’s worth stopping by at least once. Pull up a stool at the small bar (forget about getting a table), try to avoid making eye contact with the fabulous people who do show up, and enjoy the fact that you and Woody Allen’s butts have probably shared the same stool leather.
