Dutch Kills: This long-awaited cocktail bar might be the most hyped opening in Queens ever. The place is owned by Sasha Petraske - best known for Milk and Honey and Little Branch. Unlike the latter, you don't have to deal with secret guest lists, an unlisted address, or surveillance systems to get in. Easy enough to find, the narrow, wood-paneled space still delivers that speakeasy vibe that's all the rage. The attitude and prices are refreshingly un-Manhattan. The high-quality, Queens-themed concoctions ("Flushing Cocktail," "Steinway Punch," etc.) are only $8. The place shares its bizarre moniker ("kill" meaning creek in Dutch) with the Colonial-era name of its Long Island City hood. After a drink or two, it's not hard to feel like you're in an alternate universe, where Queens is the coolest borough. |
