Deity: No need to sneak a flask into this church—instead of praying for the spirit, here you pay for the spirits. One look at the thick bar menu offering a slew of house cocktails ($10-$14), whiskeys, wine, and beer, and you know this converted synogogue is all about temptation. Deity’s dramatic space—from the front gates to the hexagonal bar to the gorgeous stained-glass windows—was custom-created by local artists to embody the club’s spiritual theme. But like most houses of worship these days, Deity has a hard time getting people in the door. Perhaps that’s why they’ve recruited hip-hop legend Ali Shaheed (A Tribe Called Quest) as resident DJ on Thursdays. Roll into this lounge in the middle of Boerum Hill (a.k.a. nowhere) with a date or a group of friends, and you might find yourself drinking the Kool-Aid.
Open Thurs.-Sat. from 7pm-4am. |
