David Burke at Bloomingdale's:
Sure it’s department store dining, but this is no food court. Instead David Burke gives you haute cuisine for your haute couture in a setting reminiscent of a scene out of Willy Wonka. Bright orange and brown walls hold up plasma TVs and trippy cartoon artwork, while retro go-carts and Campbell’s soup cans are used as decoration behind the bar. Burke designed the stainless steel tables himself—they hold bright limes and lemons hostage while you eat and drink. Choose from their vast wine selection or have a signature coffee cocktail to complement an order of roasted angry “hen in law” or millionaire’s meatloaf. If you’re in store for a quickie, head next door to Burke in the Box for a similar menu in takeout form. Or just stop by to admire Burke’s peculiar collection of jack-in-the-box toys. The only thing missing is an Oompaloompa behind the bar to take your order.
