Daruma: Lined with chic boutiques like Alice + Olivia, this block isn't a likely location for a cheap sushi and yakatori joint, but surprise, surprise: Daruma has arrived. The bacon wrapped scallop yakotori stick ($2 a pop) is superb, as is the Key West Roll made with spicy scallops and white tuna($11). And don’t think that “cheap” equals “dingy” either, because the decor in this place is cleverly kawaii. To the back of the long sushi bar you’ll find a mural of faces enjoying yakatori as much as you probably will, leading to three small tables and a chandelier with carved out Hello Kitties. There’s also a small selection of sake and Japanese beers like Sapporo and Orion (four bucks a bottle.) When food’s this cheap, the temptation to do a little post-dinner shoe shopping is that much more enticing. Open daily 12pm-11pm. |
