Darbar Grill: A restaurant that's actually affordable is a welcome shift from the status quo in this upper-crusty nabe. Chef Simon Gomes, a native of New Delhi, has amassed a repertoire that spans every region of India. You'll sense it immediately in specialties like Bhel, a bowl of puffed rice with potatoes, onions, chick pea and tomatoes. It may look like an oversized serving of children's breakfast cereal, but it goes down like an exotic deviation from the usual round of curry and spice. Tandoori is a specialty here, incredibly moist and flavorful; expect heavy-duty competition for the last bite if you're dining en masse. Okra Crunch, a nicely sauteed take on the classic root vegetable, is another display of the in-house culinary talent. Of course, all this goes best with one of many beers of India. Try a Kingfisher, or pair all the delightfully heady flavors with a Sauvingon blanc. They just introduced a "Slumdog Millionaire" cocktail made with Jaljeera, a traditional summer drink infused with cumin and mint. Let's hope it sticks around long after the Oscar hype is over. Open Sun-Thurs 11:30am-10:30pm, Fri-Sat 11:30am-11pm.
