Millet. Seitan. Lentil. Do these words warm your heart? Make your mouth water? If so, head directly for Counter. A small First Avenue storefront belies a spacious diner-style vegan restaurant with a menu of organic-only food. Don’t worry—there’s alcohol. Die-hard meat-eaters with visions of rabbit food dancing in their heads will be shocked (and maybe converted) by heaping, delicious servings of pastas and sandwiches, as well as the innumerable culinary possibilities of everyone’s favorite soy product—tofu. The crowd includes everyone from stroller-pushing East Village parents who come for the weekend brunch to black-clad nouveau punks who swig biodynamic wine and beer into the night. A knowledgeable and borderline overly friendly staff keeps the mood upbeat. It’s enough to make a carnivore think those loopy vegetarians are on to something. Or maybe that’s the biodynamic wine talking.

Delicious!

It's surprisingly good, considering you haven't heard of half the ingredients! The pine nut paté was wonderful.
