Cody's Bar & Grill: Fourth of July comes early this year, and it’s not exactly leaving in any hurry. In fact, the Godzilla-sized American flag at Cody’s has a definite “I’m here to stay” quality that defines the bar, and is probably the reason it’s lasted almost 30 years in SoHo (and survived John Belushi’s ownership). If sitting back and catching the last quarter of the Giants game while sippin’ on a cold one is your cup of tea, then this bar is for you. Chock-full of tunnel dwellers, Cody’s cream-colored bar is home to many Jerseyians on their way out of the city. The frank and uncomplicated atmosphere of the place certainly doesn’t lose anything in translation when speaking to the folks inside. Ask one of the old-timer bartenders how many drafts they have on tap, and the answer will be “How many would you like?” Ask them if they have any White Stripes and they’ll turn to the flag and pledge allegiance. |
