Chumley's: There are two doors to enter Chumley’s, no signs, and one address: 86 Bedford. Discretion is key, as the legend goes: Every time this ex-speakeasy was under a booze raid, bartenders would shout “86,” sending patrons scrambling towards the opposite exit. Unassuming and unpretentious, this place (estab. 1832) has seen it all. Both New York’s literati and firemen, whose legacy is proudly displayed on the walls, used to call this bar home. Today, Chumley’s remains a piece of New York history, where quality food is best enjoyed with one of their signature beers. If only walls could talk.
UPDATE: Apparently the walls weren't talking, but falling down (and then torn down by the FDNY). RIP, old Chum.
UPDATE UPDATE: Almost all patched up, old Chum is coming back strong in October.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE: We know they are working on reopening, but we don't know when. |
