Chumley's
There are two doors to enter Chumley’s, no signs, and one address: 86 Bedford. Discretion is key, as the legend goes: Every time this ex-speakeasy was under a booze raid, bartenders would shout “86,” sending patrons scrambling towards the opposite exit. Unassuming and unpretentious, this place (estab. 1832) has seen it all. Both New York’s literati and firemen, whose legacy is proudly displayed on the walls, used to call this bar home. Today, Chumley’s remains a piece of New York history, where quality food is best enjoyed with one of their signature beers. If only walls could talk.

UPDATE: Apparently the walls weren't talking, but falling down (and then torn down by the FDNY). RIP, old Chum.

UPDATE UPDATE: Almost all patched up, old Chum is coming back strong in October.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE: We know they are working on reopening, but we don't know when.

Remember when....

My experience at Chumley's will forever be in my heart and never forgotten. It all began in late October 2001. My freinds and I donated money to L5 E24 in the Village and went down to Chumley's to meet some off duty firefighters. We met and chatted with "Bobby" who worked behind the bar on the side when not at the firehouse. Little did I know I would be watching his funeral on YouTube this last year. May you R.I.P. and we will never forget you Robert Beddia, you were and still are the best!

Down but not out

Whoa, ease up on the death knell Shecky's. This place is apparently reopening in October so until it's officially knocked down I'd update your update. Ok, now for my take on this bar - This place is amazing. Stong words, I know but, sure, the beers are overpriced and the crowd can be real lame but the space is one of the last relics of the Jazz Age. Think about that when you go and it's obscenely crowded.

old school

This spot is the last of its kind. If you've never been here, it should be the next bar you go to.
