Cafe D'Alsace
Still think you need to trek downtown for halfway decent grub? Not anymore. With the opening of Café D’Alsace by restaurateur Simon Oren and partners (Marseille, Pigalle, Nice Matin), Upper East Siders finally have a reason to stay put. The new 60-seat Alsa-tian bistro serves over 120 international brews and has an impressive wine list to boot. Let’s face it, where else in the city will you find both a wine and beer sommelier on the same premises? With an airy art-deco design and an ample bar area, locals can stop in for a brew or linger longer to explore the wonders of Chef Philippe Roussel’s Alsatian cooking. It’s no surprise that so many uptowners are opting to save their cab fare and splurge on the Tarte Flambee—an onion tart flavored with thyme and bacon. Or, how about the signature entrée, Choucroute Garnie? With generous portions of duck sausage, sauerkraut, and pork served in a heavy cast-iron pot, you’ll need more than one beer to wash down this hearty stew. Luckily, you won’t suffer from lack of choice.
