Cafe Bar Astoria: There’s nothing generic about Café Bar. Despite the indistinct name, this unique space has been the epicenter of all things hip in Astoria for over ten years. Owner Monika Contantinides clearly suffers from ADD—in a good way—seemingly redecorating every two days, but always keeping it funky. (Think retro furniture, faux stained glass, and a massive backlit painting of a naked girl). Prepare to plop down for hours on a loungy couch, or at a sidewalk table overlooking Kaufman Astoria Studios, home of Sesame Street. It’s the best people-watching spot around, and in true European style, nobody minds if you linger. Menu is Cretan/Mediterranean (try the lahmajun!) with an extra focus on organic and vegetarian, but ultimately it’s a café and bar, so why not order their potent Espresso Martini?
