Cabrito: Greenwich Village needs another Mexican restaurant like it needs another bank branch, but this recently re-fired restaurant (Barfry might was a tempura-battered flash in the pan) is worth a closer look. You know this isn’t another burrito joint the moment you realize a bright-colored goat looming over the front entrance isn’t a piñata. Chef David Schuttenberg (Craft, Fatty Crab) brings a lively, goat-focused menu—the signature dish is baby goat, which is rubbed with a mix of garlic, orange, and chili, and slow-roasted in a banana leaf and served with salsa made from citrus and tequila. For the less adventurous, traditional Mexican sandwiches called Cemitas are a popular alternative. Grab a hot and dirty martini (vodka, olive juice, and pickled jalapeno) at the hand-painted bar, or (weather permitting) back patio. |
