Buttermilk:
Kids who listened to Death Cab for Cutie when they were Postal Service, who still wear Vans, and who listen to their iPods with ’80s style headphones hang out at Buttermilk. Dingy and divey, the bar alone encompasses the East Village circa 2002, but instead of NYU students, the bar is filled with NYU grads who are just this side of cool (hence, not living in Williamsburg). No drink specials or food here—unassuming is totally in right now. And while the crowd may be contemplating the point of their existence, there is no question about the necessity for this cluster-happy hangout.
