Bungalow 8:
Despite the Beverly Hills motif, it doesn’t get any more “New York” than Bungalow 8. Big bouncers subtly darken this discreet doorway where, rest assured, there are celebrities inside. Flash photography is forbidden and anything goes under Bungalow’s big skylight and huge palm trees. If the Stork Club were still around, it would look like this place, which, nearly half a decade after opening, remains Manhattan’s undisputed king of nocturnal activity. The music is a refreshing mix of rock and hip-hop that serves as more of a backdrop than a centerpiece. There is dancing going on, but surprisingly, no one is looking to be noticed—the celebs get that everywhere and the non-famous are quickly humbled by seeing matinee idols and rock stars playing it cool.
