Buenos Aires: Just when you thought the Brazilians had a hold on the steak market, here comes Argentina, which is making a name for itself with Buenos Aires. Buenos Aires the restaurant, that is, which just opened in the East Village. Grill-fulls of free-range Argentinean beef are on offer along with signatures like empanadas, mollejas al verdeo (sautéed sweetbreads and scallions in white wine sauce), and the Parrillada Buenos Aires, a mixed grill plate of short ribs, skirt steak, chorizo, blood sausage, and sweetbreads. It’s like having a cookout right there at the table. Dessert comes in the form of luscious dulce de leche stuffed crepes. Selections of wine and beer from Argentina accompany the meal, as does tangy house-made sangria. Hardwood floors, cowhide banquettes, and vintage photographs of Buenos Aires decorate the delicate space, and French doors open to a garden patio in the back. We feel a round of “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina” coming on. |
