Bruar Falls: The third time's the charm they say, and after previous acts as a hilariously sleazy coke den (The Stinger Club) and a plucky (but failed) cafe (The Lucky Cat), the owners of Cake Shop have finally emerged victorious with Bruar Falls. Considering the lineage, you can be sure there'll be some live music in the mix here, so don't be thrown off when the first thing you see at this Grand Street spot is a modest, dim front room, dominated by the glow of a pinball machine. Because in back, an artfully ramshakle stage, lit like one of Andy Warhol's fever dreams, hosts an ecelctic and well-curated roster of indie and underground bands. The sound is a major improvement over that of its previous occupants, and the bar, featuring the usual, unremarkable roster of cheap beers, is affordable enough to greatly enhance your capacity for music appreciation. So if you know of someone playing here, go, because this is already one of those “I saw them when...” places. |
