Originally opened in 1794, the Bridge Café has been many things in its time: a grocery, a bar, a brothel, a disorderly house (which was 1800s speak for either “dive bar” or “brothel”), and a speakeasy. Today, though, the Café is one of the most elegant spots for drinks or dinner in New York. In the 1920s-era dining room you’ll find an eclectic American menu featuring lots of fresh seafood (the old South Street fisheries are around the corner) and homemade desserts. Behind the ancient wooden bar is an impressive display of spirits, including over 80 single-malt Scotches. It is not recommended that you try all 80 Scotches in one sitting. Apparently the owners don’t want the place turning into a disorderly house again.
