Tucked deep in the aluminum-siding district of Greenpoint, Boulevard Tavern has been a mainstay for locals almost continuously since the late 1920s, long before the hulking mass of the elevated BQE cast a shadow on its stained glass windows. Nicely refurbished after an ownership change, today’s Boulevard Tavern convincingly balances the concerns of your modern near-broke Brooklyn dweller, while retaining the old flavor of the sort of place you might have gotten stabbed at back in the day (and even a few of the locals that would’ve witnessed it). New sturdy booths and benches coexist seamlessly with real wood paneling and original stained-glass mosaics, and good deals abound. Pints run as low as $3, a fiver in the digital jukebox gets you a free kamikaze shot, and the weekend barbecue ($3 for all-you-can-eat) boasts the best burger in the neighborhood. Which isn’t hard in Greenpoint, but still.
