Botanica (Red Hook): There’s a new 'hooker in town, and she’s a looker. The neighbors may say she’s a little luxe for Red Hook, but this is not Ikea-induced gentrification. Botanica, the newest bar to the nabe, is a genuine effort of fresh fruit drinks and old fashioned flair. Waste away an afternoon among good-looking folks socializing at tables that spill out onto the sidewalk under the ornate white chandelier while drinking a Paddle Boat (bourbon, framboise beer, orange juice, and raspberries; $10). In the tradition of old-time leisure, there are board games like dominos and chess left out to play. However, any sense of logic is pretty much lost after having a Death in the Afternoon—a Hemingway concoction of champagne and absinthe ($12). Let’s hope Botanica will maintain its 1930s charm when it expands into a restaurant and performance space next month. And after your old-world experience, there is one modern convenience to take advantage of—Ikea’s free water taxi ride back to the city. |
