Bongo: Most of the time, a larger version of a bongo would be called a conga. But in this case, the (much) bigger version of Bongo—the dimutive Chelsea raw-bar—retains both the name and the fare in its all-new second location. Situated a bit closer to the water than its sister restaurant, a seat at Bongo's front bar provides an overlook of the Hudson River piers (if you can also overlook the West Side Highway in between). You'll pay for that "view" though: Excpect to shell out $18 for half-a-dozen oysters (you know about the place up the street with $1.50 oysters, right?), while even "mini" cocktails start at $9. Drink options include some 20 different martinis, so sampling them all would take an eternity—and a trust fund. Thankfully, Bongo has a friendly staff, especially considering its posh presentation, so it fits the bill for a date or a night with the girls. Just remember: Even though this place is named for a drum-like instrument, it's your wallet that will take a beating. |
