Boca Chica: When Boca Chica, a Latin libation-serving lounge in the East Village, opened 15 years ago, the owners figured that even if people didn’t stay to sample the South American food, the strong, fruity margaritas would win them over. With a little help from its friends the mojito and sangria, this semi-kitschy drink menu has proven sufficient cover for a less-than-authentic, but still serviceable menu. Boca Chica’s a destination spot for large groups, including bachelorette parties and uptown couples in search of a downtown night out. Service here is a bit rushed, so scarf down the fried plantain chips and dip before they’re taken away. The bright colors and kitschy décor add an element of fun at the full-contact bar where a Santeria-like décor seems to keep it all safe. |
